Trash and Recycling Procedures: All trash (no yard debris) must be out to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day.  All holidays can effect trash pickup schedule due to the landfill being closed.  Trash must be in clear plastic bags not weighing over 25 pounds per bag.  Single-family homes and businesses are limited each week to 10 bags and multiple dwellings are limited to 6 bags per unit.
See Trash and Recycling Facts brochure

All holidays have an effect on trash pickup.  Changes are published in the Cortland Standard, announced on WXHC 101.5 FM, and posted on the bulletin board of the website or call the Village Clerk’s office at 749-3322.

Trash Collection Rules and Regulations

  1. Trash and recyclables should only be placed curbside or in an area that has been cleared near the street, curb, or driveway by 7:00 a.m. the day of collection.
  2. Trash and recyclables pickup is for village residents only. Imported items are not allowed and could subject a guilty party to prosecution.
  3. Recyclables should be placed in a container that can be easily dumped, i.e. laundry basket, crate, any container that is not or doesn’t resemble a trashcan or garbage pail. Try to avoid white containers, as they are hard to see in the snow. Recyclables should be set out for collection on a weekly basis. See Recycling Guidelines.

Definition of trash: anything that is generated normally within a household during a week’s time. This doesn’t include items such as: white goods, tv’s, computers, small appliances, carpeting, building supplies, furniture, large tree limbs, tires, tire rims, or garden materials other than apples or corn husks. Items not included for pickup must be privately contracted through any of the haulers that appear in your yellow pages of the telephone book.

For Multiple Dwelling Owners: PLEASE ADVISE ALL TENANTS.

Compost Site
The Village’s compost site is located next to the Village Garage on North Fulton Street. Materials accepted are garden debris, grass clippings, leaves and branches. We do NOT accept trees, only branches. If you bring debris in plastic bags, please be sure to take the bags home with you.

Residents who remove trees from their property or have them removed must make arrangements for the trees to be taken to an acceptable site. Residents are permitted to bring branches from tree trimming or storm damage.

The compost site is ONLY for village residents to drop off grass, leaves, etc. If you observe anyone who is a resident of another municipality or who is a commercial landscaper or trash hauler, please note the license plate number or any identifying information and report them to the Police Department at 749-2022.

Signs are posted at the site to direct you where to put your composting materials. Please note especially the direction branches need to be placed in the pile. Anyone is free to take chips or compost at any time.
